Refreshments
Maybe I can offer you pictures of snow
because it is hot
That feels nice, doesn’t it
Have my hand
which is always cool
Together we can go gape at the bashed-in church
its front door closed so modestly
even though its body has been opened to the air
For dessert,
a photograph of lavender and magenta smoke
in the forest
Gagliano's photos are fascinating.
ReplyDeleteWhat a turn in your poem at that 6th line! The feeling first evoked is completely shattered.
I agree with Maureen--especially with "bashed in" and the suggestion of a human female's body. Maybe I just don't know lavender and magenta the way I should, but that smoke sure seems ominous and mysterious. This reminds me of WCW's "So much depends upon"--the physical details, including color, are compelling and unforgettable, even though I'm not sure what to do with them. I think it's a good mystery, not a flawed open-endedness.
ReplyDeleteWow- so inviting and mysterious, and it's hard to know why, which is part of the appeal. The poem, as I read it, is a conversation/communication between two "characters," but it can also be, simply, the speaker of the poem and the reader... The linked collection of photographs also depict offerings, but of a different kind... I love, Hannah, how images lead you to a fresh and unique perspective...
