Bookmarks List/Bedside Table

Currently reading and enjoying:
  • Authority, book number two of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy. Shades of Watership Down, Lost, and The Bourne Identity—perhaps even better than the first. The third book, Acceptance, is already on my shelf…
  • The Next Happy: Let Go of the Life You Planned and Find a New Way Forward by the wonderful Tracey Cleantis! Tracey and I have known each other through blogging for quite some time; I am thrilled about her amazing book. More on this soon…
  • These poems by Ivy Alvarez in Entropy Magazine.
  • This excellent illustrated essay (essay-in-comics? Just comic?) about color and racism in cartoons, “Lighten Up,” by Ronald Wimberley.

And you, friends?

  1. Oh, I have just recently discovered the poetry of Ivy Alvarez via Cha: An Asian Literary Journal and, instantly, felt a connection with her lovely works. I, also, started researching about her and got thrilled to figure out she was born in Philippines. She's now on my list the next time I visit a book sale store.

I'm not actually a huge fan of books other than poetry chapbooks, but I do read some depending on how a certain author or title intrigues me on first encounter.

Currently, I'm reading Jeff Clark's The Little Door Slides Back & Seamus Heaney's compelling version of Sophocles' Antigone, The Burial At Thebes.

    Nice share, Hannah!

  2. I'm half-way through 'The Cruel Country', a memoir; just received yesterday Jane Hirshfield's two new books. I'm also reading 'H is for Hawk'.

  3. Love the new look, Hannah, clean and so ... you. I too liked those Alvarez samples; glistening pain milk in a lot of different rooms wholly independent of its source. Lately I've read Almost Invisible, Mark Strand's last thin book, which was both less and more than the greatness he had always promised; No Respect by Gerard Malanga, which was shockingly good in parts; and The Way It Is, William Stafford's last book of poems, which is great in an unqualified way. I'll share one little poem from there that I think you'll like:

    When I Met My Muse
I glanced at her and took my glasses
off--they were still singing. They buzzed
like a locust on the coffee table and then
ceased. Her voice belled forth, and the
sunlight bent. I felt the ceiling arch, and
knew that nails up there took a new grip
on whatever they touched. "I am your own
way of looking at things," she said. "When
you allow me to live with you, every
glance at the world around you will be
a sort of salvation." And I took her hand.

    Take care!

    1. So lovely to read your comment this morning, Bill! So glad you stopped by and said hello. Sadly, I've cut way back on reading blogs and blogging pals (due to most of my time going to grading during the semester)...I've missed everyone.

What a great poem from Stafford. I always enjoy him...I'll put that collection on my list to check out at some point. Thanks for including the poem here, too!!

Hope all is wonderful in your world.
