Underbark

Underbark

A healthy horse with ribs
showing faintly, a little thirsty,

perhaps, but fine. The underbark
of birch, dark slits in the white hide

of the trunk. Ruin starts small,
but is not always where we look.

    A quick, deft move from "healthy" horse to "Ruin." And of course "underbark" is close to "underbelly." Then the chilling last line. I wonder if "but" could be "and." I'm not sure it's important, but the idea is interesting--contrast or continuation?
