Indoor Cat
All her life, the indoor cat has been trying
to get outside, to go through the hole
that the door suddenly becomes
when we open it.
And before her, the indoor cats of my childhood
were always trying to get out,
into the the street, under the porch,
under a car if it was snowing or raining.
Outside, the indoor cat would feel abandoned,
wouldn’t she, by me. It would be all
my fault. If only I had been more careful,
more worried.
You've written about my current life. When the cats run out, though, I don't feel that bad.
ReplyDeleteI think I get why they do it, however.
