Optometry
The eyes are the portholes to the
soul. Scribbled in the pinwheel
of your iris, your sins. The eyes
are the bay windows to your
brain. A cat perches on a cushion
in the warmth of the light I am
shining into your eyeball. This
is a good sign. You have a cat
in both your eyes, although one
is a little bigger than the other,
a Maine Coon and a Persian.
Your eyelids are the curtains
to the soul. You keep throwing
them open and closed. You are
beginning to worry the across
-the-street neighbor. She can’t
read your signal, but it looks
like a distress call. Can you
see ok. There are supposed to
be bugs crawling in your
valances. I mean your lashes.
You're like the coolest sort of curator, Hannah. I favorite almost every site you share. xoxo
ReplyDeleteGreat take on your inspired prompt.
ReplyDeletehannah, you make me scream in delight. you always, ALWAYS take us to new and surprising places! the cats, named and different sizes, the Maine Coon and the Persian! the repetition to the naming of the entrances to the soul - how this delights me and draws me in. the neighbor! ha! the bugs! the bugs, hannah! (do you get excited when you write this?) and let's not forget this is about glancing at the soul. oh, my dear, tell me when your book is coming out. how i'd love to hold your work.

"Scribbled in the pinwheel
ReplyDeleteof your iris, your sins." Reminds me of how the protestors arrested for not leaving the public park last weekend had their bail conditioned on agreeing to have their irises scanned and put into a central database. Eye trading a la Minority Report can't be too far in the future.
So incredibly true..the window to our souls. If you stare long enough into the pupil it starts dilating and contracting...kind of weird! I would love to have cats in my eyes and frequently, believe it or not, I look for my reflection in their eyes. LOOVe this poem as did every one else for a different reason perhaps. Happy Tuesday!

Inspired.
You are

Don't ask me why, but this is my favorite part.
