Excellent Choice

Excellent Choice

Very good, Miss, I am sure
you will like it, the server says
when I ask him to bring me
one of the specials chalked
in pink block letters on the board
at the entrance. When were you
last reassured that you will love
what you’ve chosen, did your mind
recline and stretch its legs, as if
on a lawn chair. Purveyors
of hospitality package comfort
as pleasure, pleasure as joy.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight,
the attendant suggests, so I do,
I give my bones to the cushions
under me, here, hang on to me
for a while, I trust you.

  1. Of course, even knowing that had one ordered the cold spaghettios in plum sauce, it would have been "an excellent choice", it is still weirdly comforting and satisfying to hear.

    I love the ending.

  2. I laughed before I even saw the poem...as soon as I heard excellent choice in my head I remembered a chinese restaurant where they guy kept saying excellent choice regardless of what we selected...I asked him which was not an excellent choice? xo

  3. I love how you migrated from the images of colors all lined up perfectly to this!

Every time I hear "sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight" I can't stop thinking about crashing.

  4. I love the line "I give my bones to the cushions under me." That so eloquently evokes the feeling of letting go, of experiencing true relaxation.

  6. I like the whole poem, especially the central idea. But this is in a league of its own:

    When were you
last reassured that you will love
what you’ve chosen, did your mind
recline and stretch its legs, as if
    on a lawn chair.

(any reason for period instead of question mark?)
