This Is the Year

This Is the Year

This is the year we will always discuss.
We will stick it into our sentences
like thumbtacks into cork.

We will talk about the year's doubleness
and evenness, about how we filled
its round, moony zeros
with decisions.

Do you remember twenty ten?
We will ask each other
long into the future,
as if time were the name of a town
we still can't believe
we had the fortune of inhabiting.

  2. This is the best new year poem I've read so far! Big applause. "We will stick it into our sentences/like thumbtacks into cork" is awesome.

I remember how funny I used to think it was when elderly people said things like "Nineteen hundred AND forty." I wondered why they didn't just say nineteen forty. Yesterday, I heard someone say "Twenty Oh Nine" to refer to last year, and it seemed weird. I still say Two Thousand AND nine. Now kids can laugh at me:)

  3. I love the closing lines: "as if time were the name of a town we still can't believe we had the fortune of inhabiting."
