Enjoy Your Horse
Take this grass, take this land,
this barn. Take
the horse you already have,
give her to me.
Let your horse live here, with
me. She will be
fed. Brushed. Safe. The other
horses will speak
to her as one of their own, she
will find love here.
You can see her whenever you
like. She will always
remember you, her name in
your voice means
peace that emanates throughout
the universe, this
will not change. You may miss
her, but you can
check on her. You can envision
her walking toward
the apple tree’s shade. She will
want for nothing.
Lovely...you had me wondering if my childhood horse who was boarded really had a good time without us or ? He always remembered us...I did not like that he had made such good friends though. : )
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm done with something, it goes to the glue factory.
ReplyDeleteI like the spirit, generosity, sharing in this (which is helped by the very free and surprising enjambments). Just a touch of extravagance from the speaker in the last line, yet the rest of the poem has made me believe it. And it is, wisely, just a touch.
ReplyDeleteMeghan O'Rourke has a wonderful horse poem. I posted about it a long time ago. I don't remember how much it has in common with your poem, but I liked it.
Here's the blog post, which includes the link to the O'Rourke poem. They touch on your question about writers having fun . . .

Congrats on finishing a term. It's always a relief.
Whoa (like we might say to a horse)....that is a beautiful horse poem, indeed, John! Thank you for sharing it.
